This is Marky the kitten, who had not eaten and had been vomiting for two days, with normal blood test results. Abdominal ultrasound revealed dilation and fluid filling of the duodenum and stomach, a foreign body in the duodenum producing an image with a characteristic strong shadow, complete obstruction of the intestine at the foreign body, and normal intestinal folds beyond it. It is rare for ultrasound to be such a definitive, standalone method for diagnosing a foreign body in the digestive tract as it was in this case. During the operation we removed a rubber toy — a “sticky” — from Marky’s small intestine. Post-operative treatment included antibiotics, anti-emetics and a 48-hour fasting diet, which is mandatory after digestive tract surgery. Marky recovered fully and is now happy at home — we hope he will be more careful about what he snacks on.
