Meet Jessie. Two days earlier her owner noticed something strange in one of her eyes. The examination established that the puppy had a prolapse of the third eyelid gland, also known as “cherry eye”. In most cases the cause is a congenital weakness of the fibrous tissue that anchors the gland. It mainly affects young dogs, with a breed predisposition in Bulldogs, Beagles and Cocker Spaniels, but it can affect other breeds too. In rare cases it is also seen in cats. Treatment is surgical. After the operation Jessie was discharged with eye drops for home treatment, applied for one more week.
