This is Boyko the dog. Ever since he came to his owners, they had noticed a strange patch on his eye with hairs growing out of it. The examination established that Boyko had a dermoid cyst on the sclera and cornea of one eye. A dermoid cyst is an overgrowth of skin tissue in an atypical place. Treatment is surgical and consists in removing all of the tissue. In most cases the eye needs to be closed temporarily by suturing the third eyelid to the skin of the upper eyelid, since a large corneal defect results. This allows the cornea to regenerate faster and protects the eye from dust and further mechanical injury. The third eyelid stays sutured for 2 weeks, during which antibiotic drops are applied. After the stitches are removed, treatment continues for one more week. Boyko recovered fully after the surgical treatment and enjoys excellent eyesight.
