This is Mars, an 11-month-old cat with bilateral congenital luxation of the kneecap. For two months his owners had noticed lameness in the hind limbs.
The examination established medial luxation of the kneecap on both legs. In his case this is a congenital condition linked to a deformation of the tibial crest, which displaces the kneecap and causes the lameness. The disease is more common in small dog breeds but also occurs in cats. The only treatment option in this case is corrective surgery, in which the tibial crest is transposed and the kneecap is fixed in the correct position. At City Veterinary Clinic, Mars had a successful TTT operation, first on the right leg; the recovery period is 3 weeks, after which the other leg must be operated on as well.
